At the upcoming US Open to be held at Merion Golf Club, wicker baskets sit atop the hole marker rather than flags. What lead to the idea to use wicker baskets as a hole marker?

The wife of Hugh Wilson, Merion's founder, was a Ph.D. in basket weaving history and technology and proposed the concept.
On a trip to Europe in 1910, Mr. Wilson saw baskets in use because they survive strong seaside winds better than flags.
Scottish shepherds used walking sticks topped by baskets in which they stored their lunch
Baskets prevent golfers from being able to judge the wind which they can do with flags. To this day Merion East has no yardage markers and no use of range finders to make golf more challenging.
The origin of the baskets remains a mystery to this day.
