Groom Remains Under-Par to Claim StateLine Tour Championship

Steve Groom of Raytown, MO finished what he started with his second consecutive round of 71 to win the Senior Division of the StateLine Tour Championship. The 1-under par score was highlighted by three birdies on the day including two of Creekmoor’s par-5s. Groom was followed in a three-way tie by Charlie Schorgl, Don Kuehn, and Andy Smith. David Hamilton, after a solid opening round of even-par, played well again today shooting 76 to hold onto the Senior Net Division title at Net 144.
Padden Nelson would mirror Groom once again holding onto his overnight lead to win the Open Division title by a single stroke over Jon Platz at 149. Platz had a marvelous bounce back round of 3-under-par 69 to finish solo second. Nelson was even-par for the day after fifteen holes, but slipped on sixteen and seventeen. A routine par at eighteen wrapped it up and left Nelson all smiles.
Jerry Reid was able to reel off six birdies at the The Golf Club at Creekmoor Saturday to capture the Legends Division by four strokes over Tim Clemens. Reid got off to rough start, but recovered with energy to shoot his 34-35-69. Duke Duggan of Lee’s Summit, MO was all smiles after his Net 5-under par 139 took home the Net Legends title.
Players Division points leader Ben Colburn of Overland Oark, KS grabbed the win with his eagle-three at the final hole Saturday to best first round leader Simon Wally by three strokes. Colburn’s 77-73-150 was highlighted by two eagles during the championship, both on number eighteen. Andrew Makowske, was able to fight through the pain as he is recovering from a broken foot to claim the Net Scoring title at even-par.

Day 1 Recap
Steve Groom of Raytown, MO was the only man to shoot under-par Friday at The Golf Club of Creekmoor in the opening round of the 2011 StateLine Tour Championship. Groom’s round included five birdies on the day and a costly double-bogey at the tenth. Groom’s 35-36-71 round places him a single stroke ahead of David Hamilton, Kevin Handlin, and Don Kuehn for the Seniors title heading into the final round Saturday.
Padden Nelson of Olathe, KS takes a one stroke lead himself in the Open Division heading into Saturday with his round of 36-38-74. Nelson made a single birdie and bogey on the front side and kept the momentum going with a smooth enough finish paring the final three holes to hold off Jason Hull and 2010 StateLine Tour Championship Winner Aaron Uzelac. Nelson entered the championship on a high note after recording a hole-in-one at Ironhorse Golf Club on September 19.
Simon Walley of Overland Park, KS holds a two shot lead over Ben Colburn with his round of 3-over par 75 for the Players Division title. Walley had an up and down round with four birdies, but the biggest came at the final hole where Walley had to come back from a triple-bogey at the par-3 seventeenth. Colburn made a huge putt himself at eighteen with an eagle three to pull within Walley by two. Andrew Makowske, who is less than two months recovered from a broken foot, leads to the Net Scoring Division with a Net 70.
Legends Division leader Jerry Reid of Kansas City, MO holds a two shot lead over Mitch Bowen with his first round score of 3-over par 75. Reid birdied twelve and thirteen and cruised in with pars down the stretch to play the back side at even-par. Steve Defenbaugh of Olathe, KS leads the Net Scoring Senior Division at Net 69.
