Categories: Men's Golf, Top Story | Posted: November 29, 2011 | No Comments »The Kansas City Golf Association has announced Steve Groom of Raytown, MO has captured his second consecutive Senior Amateur of the Year Honor after another brilliant season in 2011. Groom took advantage of an opportunity to play alongside Tom Watson in round two of the 2011 Watson Challenge. Groom was the low senior in the event and claimed that playing alongside Tom Watson was one of the greatest thrills of his playing career. After the Watson Challenge Groom kept steam rolling into the Kansas City Amateur hosted by Shoal Creek Golf Club in July where he claimed the victory at 4-under par. Groom was able to win by a single stroke over Tom Leonard of Leawood, KS after a final round 2-under par 69. A handful of StateLine Amateur Tour victories kept Groom on the inside track for the Player of the Year Honors. Alongside teammate and close friend Andy Smith of Gladstone, MO Groom captured the 2011 Heart of America Four-Ball Senior Division title in early August. To round off his year, Groom added one more important victory in September at the StateLine Amateur Tour Championship with a three stroke victory over Andy Smith. Groom is trailed by 2011 Kansas City Masters Senior Division Champion Charlie Schorgl and fellow Heart of America Champion Andy Smith.
