The Junior team from St. Louis representing the Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association (MAGA) defended the Mid-America Junior Cup with a 6 to 2 victory over the Junior team representing the Kansas City Golf Association (KCGA) at Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis over the weekend. Day one proved difficult for the KCGA team as the matches ended in the MAGA team’s favor 4-0 in the four-ball format. Day two brought more excitement with the co-ed foursomes matches, including victories by the team of Taylor Black & Tanner Owen and the team of Mariah Peters & Nick Rehmer. This marked back-to-back victories by the MAGA after a stretch where the KCGA had held the Cup from 2007-2010.

Leawood, KS – The Kansas City Golf Association wrapped up the 2012 season today with the Kansas City Masters held at Leawood South Country Club.  The top 18 open players and top 9 senior players off the Bushnell points list competed for the final title of the year.  Brett Iliff of Olathe, KS, added his name to the winner’s circle as the final champion of the 2012 season with his stellar two round total of 138, four-under-par.

The first round leader started his round on fire today, with an eagle 3 on the par-5 opening hole. Six pars and one bogey would allow Iliff to go out in two-under-par 34 on the front nine at Leawood South.  Five straight pars on the back nine led him to an ultimate five shot victory over the always-tough competitor in Bryan Norton of Mission Hills, KS.  The 2011 Kansas City Masters champion, Norton, played consistent golf over the two-day event, finishing at one-over-par 143 to claim runner-up honors.  A two-way tie for 3rd place between former Mizzou golfer Kris Casburn and Kansas City Amateur champion Steve Groom at 148 would round out the top 3 places.

The Senior division came down to the wire to name its champion in a day that produced nearly 30 mile per hour winds on a narrow course with out of bounds on nearly every hole. Charlie Schorgl of Leawood, KS, ultimately would repeat as Kansas City Masters Senior champion with a one-shot victory over Kevin Handlan of Leawood, KS.

Schorgl entered the day with a two-shot lead, but would see it disappear on the early holes of the back nine, with Handlan making birdie on the par-4 11th hole to bring them to even with 7 holes to play.  Schorgl would then make back-to-back birdies on the par-4 14th hole and par-5 15th hole to defeat Handlan by one-shot.

Leawood South Country Club - On a picturesque fall day, the top amateur players in Kansas City took to Leawood South Country Club in search of the Kansas City Masters title.  Brett Iliff was the first player off the tee this morning at 8:30 a.m. and quickly birdied the first hole.  That birdie set the tone for a first round 68 to lead all players in the Open division of the KC Masters.  The lead is a slim one stroke over the current Bushnell Points list leader and reigning KC Amateur Champion, Steve Groom.  Groom carded seven birdies on the day, but a costly double bogey on the difficult par 4 11th hole left him settling for a first round 69.

Also near the lead are two Kansas City stalwarts, Bryan Norton and Kris Casburn.  Norton is the KC Masters defending champion and Casburn is no stranger to KCGA titles.  Both players enter round two three shots back after carding first round 72s.

In the Senior division, Charlie Schorgl leads all players with an even par round 71.  Schorgl had sixteen pars, a birdie and a bogey on his very consistent scorecard today.  He leads reigning KC Senior Amateur Champion Tom Leonard by one shot going into tomorrow’s final round.

Round two begins tomorrow morning at Leawood South C.C. at 8:30 a.m.

August 4th, 2012

Raymore, MO — The final matches of the 2012 Heart of America Four Ball Championship concluded today at The Golf Club at Creekmoor.  Now in its 51st year, the Heart of America is one of the oldest team championships in the United States.  Past champions, and medalists include PGA Stars Gary Woodland, Payne Stewart, Tom Kite, Tom Pernice and Jim Colbert.  Since its inception, the Heart of America Four Ball Championship has identified the best two man team of golfers in the central United States.

In the Open division final, K-State teammates Curtis Yonke and Ben Juffer defeated the pair of Josh Weems and Jackson Foth.  After the first 18 holes of the 36 hole final, Weems and Foth lead the match 2 up.  They carried that lead until the 25th hole of the match when Juffer made a birdie two to take the first lead for Yonke and Juffer in 22 holes.  Once they had the lead, they put the accelerator down.  the pair then proceeded to birdie six of the last eight holes in their match to put Foth and Weems away.  The victory will allow Curtis Yonke to add his name to the list of Heart of America champions alongside his grandfather, Jim Colbert, who won the championship in 1964.

In the Masteres division, the team of Steve Groom and Andy Smith were victorious winning 4 & 3 over Cunningham and Downey.  When asked about the chemistry between himself and Smith Groom had this to say, “he (Andy Smith) never hits it out of play.  I can step on every tee and be as aggressive as I want to be, kinowing that he is going to have my back. ”  The duo made seven birdies in their first fifteen holes including three straight birdies on holes four, five and six.

Groom and Smith now boast a tremendous record in the Heart of America Championship.  They now have three total victories in various HOA Championships They took home the Senior title in 2009 and the Masters title in 2010 and now 2012.

In the Senior division, Mitch Bowen and Stewart Shockley defeated Jim Seward and Dave Harris with a dramatic victory on the eighteenth hole.  The steady team of Bowen and Shockley never carded a bogey in their final two matches.

Thank you to the Golf Club at Creekmoor and congratulations to our 2012 Heart of America Champions!
