Kansas City Amateur Championship

July 12-15, 2013 at Shoal Creek Golf Course

The Kansas City Amateur Championship is in it’s 23rd year of competition in the Greater Kansas City area. The championship originated in 1991 as a 54-hole medal play competition, taking a brief break from 1996 – 2003. A predecessor to the Kansas City Amateur Championship was the Kansas City Medal Play competition, held in the 1950s and 1960s as a 72-hole stroke play competition played over several different courses.

The Championship was revitalized in 2003 at Hillcrest Country Club, where Chris Mabry would reign as champion.  Players may compete in four separate flights of the Kansas City Amateur: the Open flight, Players flight, Senior flightand Legends flight.  Players must have an index of 3.4 or less to participate in the Open flight and compete in gross scoring only. The Senior flight requires an index of 18.2 or less and at least 50 years of age by the first day of the championship, with competition in gross scoring only. A handicap index of at least 1.0 but not more than 18.2 is required for the Players flight, who compete in both gross and net scoring. Finally, a player must be at least 60 years of age by the first day of the championship for the Legends flight, competing in both gross and net scoring.

The championship consists of 156 players who will play 54-holes of stroke play with a 36-hole cut to determine the Kansas City Amateur champion.

Groom Wins Amateur Championship, Leonard Takes Senior Division

Steve Groom of Raytown, MO, is the 2012 Kansas City Amateur Champion. Groom held off solid competition over the course of three days at Shoal Creek Golf Course in Kansas City, MO to take the title in the Open division.

Groom was able to finish with a one-under-par 212 for the 54-hole stroke play championship. His nearest finisher was Round 1 leader Austin Conroy of Lee’s Summit, MO, who finished 1 stroke behind at even-par 213 for the championship.

In the senior division, Tom Leonard took home the championship honors for 2012. Leonard’s tournament was shortened by the cancellation of the first round due to storms, resulting in no cut for the field after 36 holes. The loss of the first round didn’t affect Leonard, however, as he played consistent golf over the course of the 36 holes firing 70-70 to shoot a 36-hole total 140, two-under-par.
